AN INTERVIEW WITH COMPETITOR, MEGAN ETHINGTON, FOR THE MY JOURNEY STORY SERIES.

LAC: When did you decide to start making your health a priority (what or whom inspired this decision) and what were your goals?

Megan: I lost my brother unexpectedly in 2007 to an underlying heart condition. In 2011, at my heaviest of 263 pounds I knew I had to change! Having my son Pierce inspired me, he deserved the best version of me as well as my husband, in the fight to save myself and my marriage.

LAC: How did you get started and what did you do to improve your health?

Megan: I read a lot and educated myself to put the experts to the test. I just woke up, decided, and did! To improve health I changed all eating habits(drinking too). I then started cardio and weight training. Even on a bad day I’m accountable because a bad workout is better than none!

LAC: How did you stay motivated and what was the biggest challenge?

Megan: I look at my son, who I used to be, and who I am now. I have worked hard to be her/ me and I like it; I choose me! And I also compete. I am an emotional night eater. My biggest challenge has always been food because it has always been my enemy and weight my friend. I wasn’t 263 pounds by chance!

LAC: What positive changes did you see in your life and what did you learn throughout this process?

Megan: Everything! I have a new business, a stronger marriage, less stress, less anxiety, a new hobby(competing), new friends, etc. I learned that the mind is a strong thing and you are your only excuse! It’s not easy, but it’s possible and so worth it!

LAC: Final Thoughts? Is there anything else you would like share about your story?

Megan: I have always battled weight so it does not come naturally but by choice. 263 pounds with an infant, new business, and husband working overseas all but two months a year making me basically a single mom. Life is hard day to day then add in life circumstances. We all have a story, however I choose my journey because I live it daily. Its my weight and my emotional binge eating, but I choose me so everyday is my health journey. I am a figure competitor now at 35 starting with a weight of 263 and now at 117.
