AN INTERVIEW WITH NURSE, KORIE DUNCAN, FOR THE MY JOURNEY STORY SERIES.
LAC: When did you decide to start making your health a priority (what or whom inspired this decision) and what were your goals?
KORIE: January 1, 2014, my health issues (hypoglycemia and seizures) were the major reason for a change. I didn’t want my hypoglycemia to turn into diabetes. Also, a diet bet of $20 with 10 friends on dietbet.com to lose 10% of your body weight helped. I hate losing anything and was determined to win. By the end of the contest, in February, I won losing 30 pounds. I was addicted and wanted to lose more. As of 12/28/15 I’m down 105 pounds.
LAC: How did you get started and what did you do to improve your health?
KORIE: I got started by doing a 180 with myself. Slowly lifting and mainly cardio at first. I cut sodas, juices, sweet tea and fast food out. I prepared my meals weekly. Chicken, fish, veggies (fresh), fresh fruit, nuts and lots of water. I began actually reading the nutritional labels and seeing what I’m putting in my body. July 23, 2015 I completely quit drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.
LAC: How did you stay motivated and what was the biggest challenge?
KORIE: Truthfully, I stay motivated by wanting to prove everyone wrong who has ever doubted me with anything in my life, or everyone who bullied me growing up for being tall and bigger. My health motivated me because I want to live a long life without depending on medications. My biggest challenge was overcoming the people who doubted me, and when I would hit a point where I wouldn’t lose weight.
LAC: What positive changes did you see in your life and what did you learn throughout this process?
KORIE: The positive changes I saw/see in my life is I’m happier, I have more confidence in myself, I sleep better, I have more energy. I feel like a whole new person. I have motivated many people which inspires to me to see the hard work and time I’ve put in has made others want to better themselves. I’ve learned throughout this process anything is possible. Nothing worth having comes easy. I gained it over time so it won’t come off overnight. I’m beautiful and with dedication and motivation anything is possible.
LAC: Final Thoughts? Is there anything else you would like share about your story?
KORIE: This has been an amazing journey so far. I’m happier, I have more confidence in myself and I finally realized I can accomplish anything in life. I love the fact that every day I learn something new to better my health. Because of this life change I started nursing school and I graduate in May 2016. I’m no longer afraid of life and I finally realize I deserve the best. This journey hasn’t being easy at all but looking back it has been worth it and I can’t wait to see where it continues to take me as long as I help along the way. With motivation, dedication, positivity anything is possible.
